BIG RAPIDS, Mich. - The Lake Superior State (LSSU) hockey team (10-17-2, 8-12-1 CCHA) fell to the Ferris State Bulldogs (11-16-2, 10-11-1 CCHA) by a narrow margin of 3-2 in overtime.
Branden Piku (Harrison Twp., Mich.) got things started for the Lakers with a quick strike just over 90 seconds into the game, stuffing the puck past the goaltender off of a feed from William Ahlrik (Tidaholm, Sweden), but Zach Faremouth knotted up the score at 1-1 a few minutes later.
Both teams would then go scoreless until midway through the second period when Cole Burtch broke the tie to put the Bulldogs in front.
Both teams continued to battle with the Lakers searching for the equalizer. Then, with just over 20 seconds remaining in regulation, Reagan Milburn (Kamloops, B.C.) answered the call for a hero, tying up the game in the closing seconds of the third period with Piku and Jacob Conrad (Green Bay, Wis.) picking up assists on the play. However, despite Milburn's efforts securing a point in the CCHA standings, Ferris State would ultimately have the last laugh as Burtch ended the game in overtime after tapping in an unfortunate bounce off of a Rorke Applebee (Chateauguay, Que.) save to steal the win.
The Lakers will be looking to split the series on Saturday, Feb. 15 with puck drop scheduled for 6:07 p.m.
