Laker Hockey Fends Off Bulldogs Behind 50 Saves From Hesse

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. - The Lake Superior State (LSSU) hockey team (11-17-2, 9-12-1 CCHA) came away with a 5-3 victory on the road over the Ferris State Bulldogs (11-17-2, 10-12-0 CCHA) behind a career-high 50-save performance from goaltender Easton Hesse (Beaumont, Alta.) on Saturday.

Sasha Teleguine (North Attleborough, Mass.) opened up the scoring midway through the first after deflecting in a shot from the blue line by Evan Bushy (Thief River Falls, Minn.) in what would be the lone score of the first 20 minutes of action.

Just over ten minutes into the second period, Ferris State was able to tie up the score at 1-1 with a power play strike from Zach Faremouth. However, the Lakers responded a few minutes later as Reagan Milburn (Kamloops, B.C.) scored a power play goal of his own at the 13:32 mark and Branden Piku (Harrison Twp., Mich.) stuffed in another less than 20 seconds later to extend the LSSU lead to 3-1. Caiden Gault managed to draw the Bulldogs back within one, but the Lakers would still take a 3-2 lead into the second intermission.

Seven minutes into the third period, Piku would take advantage of a Bulldog turnover by racing up the ice for his second goal of the night and third of the weekend to extend the lead back out to a two-goal margin with what would ultimately go down as the game-winning goal. Trevor Taulien would be credited with a goal after the puck took a deflection off of a Laker player to get back within one again, but Luke Levandowski (Rosemount, Minn.) iced the game away with a score in transition after knocking in a feed from Connor Milburn (Kamloops, B.C.) to help LSSU secure the 5-3 win on the road and all three league points.

Hesse had a career day between the pipes, officially recording a career-high 50 saves on the night to pick up the win.

The Lakers will now turn their attention to their final home series of the regular season when they host the Minnesota State Mavericks in Taffy Abel Arena with game one scheduled for Friday, Feb. 21 with puck drop at 7:07 p.m.
