SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State (LSSU) hockey team (11-18-2, 9-13-1 CCHA) fell to the Minnesota State Mavericks (21-8-2, 16-5-2 CCHA) by a final score of 4-0 on Friday.
Both teams battled throughout the opening period as the defenses were able to hold strong. However, the Mavericks were able to break the scoring drought in the closing seconds of the opening period as Josh Groll put his team up 1-0.
Brian Carrabes would then double up the score nearly six minutes into the second period, and the Lakers would find themselves trailing 2-0 going into the second intermission.
Carrabes would strike again at the 3:24 mark of the third period, and midway through the final stanza, Groll scored his second goal of the night after driving from center ice to secure the 4-0 victory for Minnesota State.
The Lakers will look to bounce back in game two of the series on Saturday, Feb. 22 with puck drop scheduled for 6:07 p.m.
