SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State (LSSU) women's basketball team (5-20, 2-15 GLIAC) fell to the Rangers of Wisconsin-Parkside (17-7, 12-5 GLIAC) by a margin of 75-61 on Thursday.
Both teams battled early as a pair of baskets from Grace Bradford (Maple City, Mich.) had her team ahead 7-5, but the Rangers responded with an 11-0 run to push ahead. The Lakers clawed back with threes from Breah Golden (Arcadia, Wis.) and CeCe Hacker (Omaha, Neb.), but Parkside still found themselves leading 19-14 after ten minutes of action.
LSSU was able to seize the momentum in the second quarter, stunning Parkside with a 16-1 run to close out the half, taking the lead with a Taylor Clarey (Rochester, Minn.) and one opportunity, and Hacker sent her team into the break leading 36-29 after sinking a shot from near half court just before the buzzer sounded.
Parkside was able to start the second half strong, crawling back to within one, and after exchanging baskets, a 10-2 Ranger run would put them up by five. LSSU would earn several trips to the free throw line where they pulled themselves back within one, but the Rangers managed to pull ahead and not give up the lead for the remainder of the game, holding on to survive the Lakers' upset bid.Â
Golden led all players in scoring with 24 points. Meanwhile, Bradford and Hacker would also finish in double figures with 16 and 12 points, respectively.
The Lakers return to action on Saturday, Feb. 22 when they host the Purdue Northwest Pride with tipoff scheduled for 11 p.m.
