SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State (LSSU) hockey team (11-19-2, 9-14-1 CCHA) fell to the Minnesota State Mavericks (22-8-2, 17-5-2 CCHA) by a final score of 4-1 on Saturday.
The Lakers got off to a hot start after Dawson Tritt (Spokane, Wash.) snagged a loose puck off of a save by Rorke Applebee (Chateauguay, Que.) and pushed it ahead to Blake Humphrey (Rochester, N.Y.) who fired it in the top corner of the net for his first goal in a Laker uniform just under five minutes into the game. However, Josh Groll wasted no time tying up the score at 1-1, and Adam Eisele put the Mavericks in front a few minutes later after capitalizing on a power play opportunity.
Just over a minute into the second period of action, Rhett Pitlick fired in a shot to extend the Minnesota State advantage to 3-1. The Lakers would keep fighting, creating multiple scoring chances. However, the Mavericks managed to stand strong defensively, and in the final minute of the period.Luigi Benincasa tacked on one more for the Mavericks who would hold on for the victory after a scoreless third period.
The Lakers return to action for their final series of the regular season when they travel to face Bowling Green with puck drop for game one scheduled for Friday, Feb. 28 at 7:07 p.m.
