SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – The Lake Superior State (LSSU) hockey team (12-19-2, 10-14-1 CCHA) came away with a 4-3 victory over the Bowling Green (BGSU) Falcons (15-13-4, 11-10-4 CCHA) on Friday.
Gustav Stjernberg got the Falcons on the board first with a strike just under nine minutes into the game, but
Timo Bakos (Augsburg, Germany) knotted up the score at 1-1 with some help from
Grant Hindman (Oakland, Mich.) and
Luke Levandowski (Rosemount, Minn.) at the 13:42 mark. Maxwell Martin was able to put BGSU back in front, but late in the period,
Jacob Conrad (Green Bay, Wis.) was able to capitalize on an extra-skater opportunity with a power play goal to tie the score at 2-2 after being set up by
Timo Bakos (Augsburg, Germany) and
Branden Piku (Harrison Twp., Mich.).
Less than five minutes into the second period,
John Herrington (Hudson's Hope, B.C.) found the back of the net for the Lakers' second power play goal of the night to give his team their first lead of the night with
Carter Batchelder (Savage, Minn.) and Levandowski picking up assists on the play.
At the 15:26 mark of the third period,
Branden Piku (Harrison Twp., Mich.) slotted home one more for the Lakers to extend the lead to 4-2, putting all the pressure firmly on BGSU.
The Falcons managed to draw back within one after emptying their net in favor of an extra attacker, but it would ultimately not be enough as LSSU held on to secure all three points in the CCHA standings.
The Lakers will now look for the series sweep to close out the regular season with puck drop for game two scheduled for Saturday, March 1 at 7:07 p.m.
