SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State (LSSU) hockey team (10-16-2, 8-11-1 CCHA) fell to the Northern Michigan Wildcats (5-24-1, 4-17-1 CCHA) in overtime on Saturday.
The Lakers were able to strike first as Connor Milburn (Kamloops, B.C.) found the back of the net with just under three minutes to play in the opening period after being set up by captain Grant Hindman (Oakland, Mich.) and Sasha Teleguine (North Attleborough, Mass.).Â
Midway through the second, Rasmus Larsson managed to tie up the score at 1-1, but both defenses would hold for the remainder of the period.
Both teams would then benefit from additional spacing during four-on-four hockey after each team committed a penalty. Dawson Tritt (Spokane, Wash.) was able to score with some help from defensemen Bryan Huggins (Grand Rapids, Mich.) and Mike Brown (Belmont, Mass.) at the 5:06 mark of the third, but Anthony Cliche tied up the score again a few minutes later. Both teams would continue to battle, but neither was able to score again before the clock hit zero, securing a league point for both teams. However, it was the Wildcats that would ultimately come away with the extra point as Grayden Slipec scored the golden goal in the closing moments of the five-minute overtime period to steal the game away.Â
The Lakers return to action on Friday, Feb. 14 when they travel to face Ferris State with puck drop scheduled for 7:07 p.m.
