MANKATO, Minn. - The Lake Superior State (LSSU) Lakers (12-21-2) fell to the top-seeded Mavericks of Minnesota State (24-8-3) by a final score of 4-1 in game one of the CCHA Mason Cup Playoff quarterfinals on Friday.
The Mavericks opened up the scoring just over five minutes into the game with a goal from Zach Krajnik, and at the 13:28 mark, Krajnik would net his second of the game to double up the score. However, the Lakers would keep fighting, and at 16:15, Timo Bakos (Augsburg, Germany) put his team on the board with some help from Luke Levandowski (Rosemount, Mich.).
Both teams battled throughout the second period with the Lakers increasing the pressure with three consecutive power play opportunities, but despite creating quality chances, the score remained unchanged going into the second intermission.
Just over three minutes into the third period, Brian Carrabes managed to swat in a loose rebound to put Minnesota State back up by two scores, and despite a strong effort to try and fight their way back into the game, Krajnik was able to complete the hat trick and ice the game away with an empty-netter.Â
The Lakers will look to tie up the series in game two on Saturday, March 8 with puck drop scheduled for 6:07 p.m. Central Time.
