The same week he was named to the Mike Richter Award Watch List, Lake Superior State goaltender
Rorke Applebee earned a shutout as the Lakers beat Bowling Green 1-0 in CCHA play on Saturday.
Applebee put on another mesmerizing show, stopping 35 pucks to earn his second career clean sheet, while
Wilson Dahlheimer scored the only goal of the game at 3:00 of the first period for the Lakers (9-14-1, 6-10-0 CCHA). For Applebee, it was his 12th game of the season with 30 or more saves.
Dahlheimer struck early, using the springy boards at Slater Family Ice Arena in Bowling Green, OH to his advantage.
Tyson Galloway flung the puck off the end boards, and BGSU goalie Jacob Steinman flung himself to his right - but the puck pinballed hard off the wall and out to Dahlheimer, who quickly punched it in from the opposite wing. It was the third goal of the season for the sophomore center, and his first career game-winner.
Dahlheimer also went 3-3 in the faceoff circle and blocked two shots.
Johnny Druskinis provided the secondary assist on the goal, sending the puck over to Galloway. Druskinis blocked three shots in the game, as did co-captain
Connor Milburn. LSSU blocked 19 shots, compared to just five by BGSU.
The game turned fiery with several moments brewing throughout the game, including a fairly large-scale scuffle as time expired. Referees delegated 18 penalties at 20:00 of the third period between both teams. 162 penalty minutes were racked up at the end of a 60 minute game.
It was an intense game in front of a packed crowd that created a playoff atmosphere. The Lakers met it with determination, defending doggedly and grinding out a critical road victory as the CCHA schedule moves toward its later stages.
The Lakers now turn their attention to the Superior Ice Showdown at GFL Memorial Gardens in Sault Sainte Marie, ON on Friday, January 23rd. The Lakers cross the St. Mary's River for a showcase matchup with St. Thomas. Buy your tickets online at
