Men's Basketball: Offensive Rampage Sparks Laker Blowout Of Wisconsin Parkside

Box Score The story of Lake Superior State's blowout win over Wisconsin Parkside is told in the shooting splits. Sometimes, it's just that simple.

LSSU (11-10, 5-7 GLIAC) beat Wisconsin Parkside 106-65 on Saturday in a game that was a blowout almost from the word "go." The Lakers shot 60.7% from the field, 62.5% from three and 92.3% from the free throw line. The Lakers made 20 three-pointers for the second time this season, getting very close to the program record of 22 set against Saginaw Valley State on January 3rd, 2009.

You'll win a lot of games shooting like that.

"I thought our guys really stuck to our gameplan," said Laker Head Coach Steve Hettinga. "We're obviously trying to play smaller and create more turnovers, and I thought we did that tonight. We took care of the ball. 28 assists and seven turnovers. I mean, I can't ask for much more. Our guys played their hearts out. When you hit 20 threes, you're going to win pretty much every game you play."

Parkside (9-11, 3-9 GLIAC) never had a chance against the Lakers, who looked more like an icebreaker than a cargo freighter Saturday. Offensively, the Lakers went wherever they want, whenever they wanted to, doing whatever they felt like doing. Hands in faces? No sweat. Pressure? Not a problem. Man or zone? Irrelevant. The Lakers broke through the Rangers defensive efforts at will, then put on a show with their own defense as well.

Lake State forced 16 turnovers - 11 of which were steals - and blocked three shots. Add in a 30-7 edge in points off of turnovers and 31 fast break points, and you've got a recipe for a big win.

Harrison Sorrelle led the barrage, scoring 27 points on 8-of-10 shooting. He hit six of his seven three point attempts. Karter Richards hit seven of his 10 field goals for 16 points. Drew Hess dominated from the bench, scoring 24 on 8-of-13 shooting, with six makes in 10 tries from deep. Kendall Smith shot a perfect 4-for-4, all from three.

This game was close for all of two minutes. The Rangers scored the first two baskets of the game, and LSSU answered with a 12-0 run. Richards scored three layups, Sorrelle knocked down two triples, and the Lakers rushed out to a 12-4 lead that quickly grew further into double digits.

After a blowout win over Parkside, the Lakers hit the road for U.P. rivals week, heading to Michigan Tech on Thursday and Northern Michigan on Saturday. Watch both of those games on FloCollege, the official home of the GLIAC.
