Hockey: Nässén Scores and Assists In Series Finale With Falcons on Great Lake State Week

Casper Nässén zipped a wrister up over the shoulder of the Bowling Green goaltender on Friday night, then turned around and did it again on Saturday. The third year forward for Lake Superior State also set up William Samuelsson's first career goal in the third period of Saturday's series finale, but the Lakers (2-4-0, 0-0-0 CCHA) dropped a 4-2 result to BGSU (4-4-0, 2-0-0 CCHA).

"I thought he played like a pro this weekend," said Laker Head Coach Damon Whitten about Nässén, a Boston Bruins draft pick. "He plays like that the next few months, we might not be having him back, because he might be signing that pro contract, and good for him. He was a man out there and really scary to play against."

Nässén's Saturday goal came from high on the right circle with 5:49 remaining in the second. A power play goal, he uncorked a heavy wrister than sailed under the bar and past BGSU netminder Jacob Steinman, cutting the score to a 2-1 Falcons lead. Nässén factored in again early in the third, stealing a puck on the left wing at center ice and creating a two-on-one. He squared a pass for Samuelsson, who drifted back and hammered the puck home for his first collegiate goal. Samuelsson's strike cut the gap to a goal again, and the Lakers trailed 3-2.

"We were really happy with William's game," said Whitten. "You want to be the first line, go play and earn the minutes. He bumped way up in our lineup tonight and did himself a lot of good with the poise, the brain. There's a freshman learning curve and adjustments as always. But he's got a tremendous hockey IQ. He's got a good stick. It's the tip of the iceberg for where he can grow to and where we can help him get to. Really happy with the way he played."

Samuelsson had moved up from the fourth line on Friday to Saturday's second. He also took draws on the penalty kill throughout the weekend, showing qualities that his head coach praised after Saturday's contest.

"Playing out of position, he deserves a lot of credit as a young player. It's not always easy. But he's done a great job that way. Then you've got that reliability, that center brain to make reads, to be good on faceoffs. He becomes a very dependable, reliable and flexible player."

Breck McKinley led the scoring for the Falcons with a mid first period goal. Brandon Whynott scored early in the second and Ty Higgins tallied a mid-frame power play goal that stood as the winner. Ben Doran hit an empty netter that sealed the scoreline.

As Great Lake State Week at LSSU wraps up, there was much to reflect on for the Lakers 13th year head coach. Whitten spoke about the enormity of the week for the campus, including the induction of the first Laker Hockey Ring of Honor class. Dan Angelelli, Bill Crawford, Jim Dowd, and Domenic Monardo were honored throughout Saturday night. Earlier in the day, Laker Hockey alums Dennis Bolton and Clayton Beddoes were inducted into the Lake Superior State Athletics Hall of Fame, along with Men's Basketball star Chris Wooley and Women's Basketball star Maria Blazejewski.

"If you can take a moment and compartmentalize it, it's a special weekend," said Whitten. "My week started Monday night with the launch of The Laker Team Store, the Taffy Abel Arena reopening. Bud Denker was an incredibly well-spoken, great Laker alumni with tremendous success. Then it rolls through today with the Alumni Awards, the Hall of Fame and the Ring of Honor. That's an amazing moment for Laker Hockey, to have that first class in for the Ring of Honor. Tons of hockey alumni around and alumni in general."

Additionally, Lake Superior State announced the filming of Our Shot, a documentary series focusing on Laker Hockey that's already commenced filming. The reopening of Taffy Abel Arena, with several new displays to honor the program's past and set the tone for its future, also highlighted events this week. Whitten spoke about the efforts, praising a number of key contributors for their efforts to create a special experience for fans, alumni and student-athletes on the ice surface and around the facility.

"Real credit to Dr. David Travis for getting this project on the docket and funded, our alumni, and Tory Lindley, our Director of Athletics. We're very different. We felt that this week when we got in the building with full practice times. The bones haven't changed, but everything else has. It feels like the tremendous, high-end venue that it always has been that needed to be refurbished."

The Lakers turn westward next week, traveling to Minnesota State to face the Mavericks in Mankato, MN on Friday and Saturday. LSSU returns home on Thursday, November 5th to host Maryville, with a 7:07 start time. The two teams finish their first-ever series the next night, Friday, November 6th at 6:07 PM.
