Lake Superior State kept shooting and kept on scoring from the range in a 90-81 win over Saginaw Valley State on Thursday night in GLIAC play.
The Lakers (13-11, 7-8 GLIAC) scored 17 triples - amazingly, still only their third highest output of the season. While the Cardinals (11-12, 5-10 GLIAC) stayed in striking distance, they never held a second half lead and couldn't stop the bombardment. LSSU hit nine threes in the second half and shot 47.2% for the game from deep.
Drew Hess scored 18 points on six three-pointers for LSSU.
Harrison Sorrelle scored a team-high 20 points in 29 minutes of action. He,
Nino Carter-Smith and
Karter Richards each passed for five assists. Lake Stated tallied 24 assists as a team.
Omar Suleiman hit a three with 2:14 left in the opening half to put the Lakers up 37-35. That wiped out the last lead SVSU held in the contest. Sorrelle scored late in the half to give the Lakers a four point advantage going into the break. Suleiman knocked down another three on the opening possession of the second half to put the Lakers up seven. While the Lakers looked close to breaking the game open on a handful of occasions, the Cardinals kept hanging around, threatening to close the gap throughout.
But the timely shooting of Lake Superior State proved to be too much. While SVSU scored 44 points in the paint, the Lakers hit 10 more threes and five more free throws, while also running for a 23-16 advantage in fast break scoring.
Richards, Sorrelle, Suleiman, Hess and
Tyler Jamison each scored in double figures for Lake State.
