Hockey: Lakers Take Point From Huskies As Thrilling Rivalry Weekend Wraps In Sault Ste. Marie

For the second straight night, a late comeback forced overtime and a points split as Lake Superior State and Michigan Tech finished their duel at Taffy Abel Arena in Sault Ste. Marie, MI on Saturday night.

Michigan Tech's Teydon Trembecky scored his 13th of the season to win the game in overtime at 3:41, giving the Huskies (21-10-3, 16-5-3 CCHA) a 5-4 win and two of three league points on the night. The Lakers (9-19-2, 6-15-1 CCHA) got multipoint games from Tyson Galloway and Connor Milburn in an intense, rough-and-tumble contest.

With Lake State's shootout win on Friday, the two teams split the six points evenly, three to three.

"It was a tremendous weekend of hockey," said Laker Head Coach Damon Whitten on 99.5 YES FM after the game. "I know our fans certainly got a great college hockey weekend to enjoy some competitive hockey, the UP rivalry."

Adam Barone, who scored the shootout winner on Friday, scored late in the first to tie the game 1-1. Goals by Johnny Druskinis and Reagan Milburn put the Lakers ahead 3-1 midway through the second period. Druskinis scored a rocket, a fully wound-up slapper with his stick pointed to the heavens with time expiring on a Laker powerplay. Milburn's goal came off of an incredible forecheck by the Laker forwards, who forced multiple turnovers as the Huskies tried to break out. Eventually, they lost the puck as Galloway stepped up on the left and zipped the puck hard along the wall. Rather than engage in a boards battle, Teleguine deftly flicked it back in front of the goal to Milburn, who hammered home past a surprised netminder to put the Lakers up by two.

Whitten said, "It's good to have Reagan going. He's a guy that can offensively impact the game. He's a big strong guy that can skate and he's a scorer everywhere he's played. It's a great play by Sasha to set that goal up, Reagan's in a great spot, and he makes no mistake with it."

Galloway's play stood out for LSSU. The sophomore defenseman picked up two assists, finished as a +2 and drove the play toward the MTU end, giving their defense a big challenge to deal with.

"You're starting to see who Tyson Galloway can be," Whitten said. "It was an outstanding weekend for him he's been better and better. He's blossoming a little bit. He's got tremendous skating ability. He's got great size and reach. It's great to get him contributing offensively, so I think his confidence is up and our confidence in him is up as well because he's playing at a high level."

While Isaac Gordon scored for Tech in the second, the Lakers popped in their fourth of the game from William Ahlrik, who banged home a bouncing puck. The Swedish sophomore continues his stellar second campaign in the Sault with his eighth goal and 21st point of the season.

The Huskies got a pair of goals by Trembecky to tie the game, then win it in overtime. But the result meant an even share of the points on the weekend in a thrilling series with weeks to go until the CCHA's Mason Cup Playoffs begin.

Another U.P. rivalry series looms for the Lakers. LSSU took five points from Northern Michigan in the Soo earlier in the season. Lake State heads west to face the Wildcats in Marquette next weekend in the final two games of the Cappo Cup series. With five points out of six already secured from that series and another six up for grabs, the Lakers control the battle for the cup.

Then, LSSU wraps its home schedule with a showdown against Ferris State late in February. Buy your tickets online or at the Norris Center box office.
