Volleyball: Lakers Start GLIAC Schedule at GVSU

Lake Superior State began GLIAC play on Friday night with a trip south to Grand Valley State. Despite a quality start to the match, LSSU (3-6, 0-1 GLIAC) was beaten by GVSU (7-2, 1-0 GLIAC) in straight sets, 25-14, 25-11, 25-6.

The Lakers scored their first point of the match on a kill by Morgan Deming, the fourth-year middle. First-year DS/L Amilia Ashcroft quickly delivered a service ace for LSSU. Kills from Gia Waters and Elisa Rizzoli were followed by a service ace from Mia Garcia, and the Lakers trailed 10-8 in the first set. But GVSU answered with a long run that ended with a Shea Berisoff kill late in the opening set. She scored another shortly after, but GVSU took the first, then opened with a big rally in the second.

Waters cut into the rally with a kill for LSSU, but the Lakers pushed the hosts in the middle of the second set. Down 16-6, Rachel Steele and Waters both scored kills, then Rizzoli delivered the third ace of the match. Rizzoli scored another in the third and leads Lake State with 10 in nine matches this season. But Grand Valley found its rhythm and went on another run to close the second set, followed by two in the third.

Rizzoli led LSSU in digs with 13. It's her fifth time leading the team in digs this season. Steele and Jade Peterson each scored a pair of block assists, working well together up front.

The Lakers travel to Kenosha, WI for their next GLIAC match, Saturday at 6:00 PM ET. then LSSU heads back to Sault Ste. Marie for the home opener against Saginaw Valley State on Friday, September 18th.
