BIG RAPIDS - A Lake Superior State hockey team
that has yet to play a Central Collegiate Hockey Association game
on home ice this season continued to take care of business on the
road.
The Lakers fended off Ferris State's power play and edged the
Bulldogs 2-1 Friday at Ewigleben Ice Arena. They are 2-2-1
overall and 2-1-0-0 in the CCHA heading into Game 2 at 5
p.m. Saturday.
Ferris State (2-3-2 overall, 1-1-1-0 CCHA) and LSSU traded
5-on-3 power-play goals before Laker Troy Schwab broke the
1-1 tie with an even-strength goal at 19:29 of the second
period.
FSU's Justin Lewandowski scored the Bulldogs' only goal at 10:58
of the first period. LSSU's Matt Cowie tied it at 11:19 of the
second period as Zac MacVoy and Rick Schofield drew assists.
Nathan Perkovich and MacVoy assisted on Schwab's game-winning
goal.
LSSU goaltender Brian Mahoney-Wilson stopped all 10 shots in the
second period and 16 in the third. He totaled 33 saves for the
night.
FSU netminder Pat Nagle totaled 29 saves, including seven in the
third period.
Ferris State finished 1-for-11 on the power play, while Lake
Superior State was 1-for-9. The Lakers killed off a penalty during
the final 49 seconds of regulation.
