Box Score SAULT STE. MARIE - After losing an overtime heartbreaker on its
homecourt Saturday, the Lake Superior State men's basketball team
prevailed in overtime Sunday, beating Wisconsin-Parkside 91-89.
LSSU (1-1) trailed 33-32 at halftime, but controlled the
first 10 minutes of the second half and built a double-figure lead.
Wisconsin-Parkside (0-2) outscored the Lakers 15-7 during the final
4:31 of regulation to even the score, 78-78. The Rangers' Dave
Keane barely stepped on the three-point line when he hit a
game-tying jumper with one second remaining.
Tim VanOudheusden, who led the Lakers with 28 points, converted
a three-point play with 2:28 remaining in overtime to give LSSU an
83-80 lead. After a UW-P turnover, teammate Mark Morse hit a jumper
on an outlet pass from Ryan Kuhl to make it 85-80.
The Rangers made two free throws at 1:07 and two more with 43
seconds to go to tie it, 87-87. Kuhl answered with a
wide-open layup on a long pass from Morse for an 89-87
LSSU lead.
Wisconsin-Parkside lost control of an inbounds pass and was
forced to foul during the final seven seconds. Morse made two more
free throws and secured the Laker win.
VanOudheusden was 10-of-12 at the free-throw line as Lake
Superior State finished 21-of-25 as a team. Morse made 5-of-10
three-point field-goal attempts and scored 22 points. Kuhl finished
with 16 points, and Garrett Konuszewski and Micah Hudson had nine
each.
The Lakers shot 48.3 percent from the field and were 12-of-26
from three-point range. They committed eight turnovers, including
only three during the second half and overtime combined.
Wisconsin-Parkside's LaVontay Fenderson led all scorers with 30
points. The Rangers shot 51.6 percent from the field and made
14-of-16 free throws. The out-rebounded LSSU, 38-28.
LSSU plays a non-conference home game at 7 p.m. Tuesday against
Northland Baptist Bible College.
