SAULT STE. MARIE - Robert Morris scored the game-winning goal
with 28 seconds remaining in regulation and snapped a four-game
losing streak with Saturday's 4-3 victory over Lake Superior
State.
Lake Superior State (4-5-3) pulled goaltender Brian
Mahoney-Wilson in favor of an extra attacker and tied the
game, 3-3, during the final minute of play, but RMU's Chris
Margott spoiled the Lakers' comeback with a goal at 19:32 and
salvaged a non-conference series split.
The Colonials (3-7-2) led 3-1 until LSSU's Fred Cassiani scored
a rebound goal at 19:37 of the second period, cutting the
margin to 3-2. Lake Superior State stayed within a goal of RMU
throughout the third period despite taking a five-minute major
with 6:37 remaining. RMU took a penalty with 2:56 to go, leaving
the teams with four skaters apiece and giving the Lakers a
power-play opportunity with 2:37 remaining.
RMU killed off the penalty but didn't get its fifth skater on
the ice when Laker Nathan Perkovich scored at 19:04 of the third
period. Simon Gysbers took the initial shot from the point, and
Steven Kaunisto and Perkovich got their sticks on
rebounds. Perkovich's goal was LSSU's first scored with
an extra attacker since Rick Schofield scored against Michigan
State on Nov. 30, 2007.
LSSU's Dan Barczuk and RMU's Brandon Blandina traded
first-period goals. Steve Oleksy and Chad Nehring drew the assists
on Barczuk's second goal of the season.
RMU's Jason Towsley tallied back-to-back goals 1:22
apart to give the Colonials a 3-1 lead in the second period.
Josh Sim and Gysbers assisted on Cassiani's goal. Gysbers and
RMU's Nathan Longpre both finished with two assists for the
night.
LSSU out-shot RMU 17-4 in the third period and 39-30 for the
game. Mahoney-Wilson finished with 26 saves, while Wes Russell had
36 saves for the Colonials.
The Lakers were 0-for-7 on the power play for the night and
0-for-15 for the weekend. Robert Morris was 0-for-5 on the power
play Saturday and 0-for-10 for the series.
LSSU, which is 0-5-1 during Saturday games, resumes Central
Collegiate Hockey Association action Nov. 28-29 at Alaska.
