SAULT STE. MARIE - Lake Superior State blanked Michigan State
2-0 Friday at Taffy Abel Arena to end a 14-game winless streak
against the Spartans and give junior goaltender Pat Inglis his
first career shutout.
Inglis, who improved his season record to 2-3-2, stopped
all 20 shots on goal and took advantage of good protection in
front of his net. Sophomore defenseman Matt Cowie led the Lakers in
blocked shots with four. It was LSSU's second shutout win of the
season.
LSSU (8-11-4 overall, 5-8-6-1 Central Collegiate Hockey
Association) beat Michigan State for the first time since Jan. 3,
2003. The 0-11-3 stretch included five losses in Taffy Abel Arena.
The Lakers won on home ice for the first time this
season since beating Robert Morris 3-1 on Nov. 21. They
improved their home record to 3-5-5 heading into Saturday's rematch
with MSU at 7:05 p.m.
Sophomore Tyson Hobbins, playing defense, scored the first goal
of the game and his second goal of the season at 8:18 of the first
period. Fred Cassiani and Troy Schwab assisted on the goal.
Junior Nathan Perkovich made it 2-0 by scoring a short-handed
goal on a long line-drive wrist shot. Laker Dan Barczuk
forced a MSU turnover at the point during the Spartans' power play,
and Cowie picked up the loose puck and fed a pass to Perkovich, who
scored from the neutral zone. Perkovich has two goals and one
assist in the Lakers' last two games.
Although the Lakers were shut out in the third period,
defenseman Steven Kaunisto hit the post, and teammate Zac MacVoy
hit the cross bar.
MSU (7-17-3 overall, 4-13-2-2 CCHA) finished 0-for-3 on the
power play, while the Lakers were 0-for-2. Spartan goaltender Jeff
Lerg totaled 30 saves.
