MARQUETTE - Northern Michigan defeated Lake Superior State 7-3
Friday at the Berry Events Center to take a four-goal lead in
the total-goals Father Cappo Cup series. The Wildcats also knocked
the Lakers out of contention for home ice for the first round of
the Central Collegiate Hockey Association Playoffs.
NMU (13-15-5 overall, 10-12-5-3 CCHA) took control of the game
early, leading 4-1 after one period and 6-1 after two. The
Wildcats, who lead the season series 1-0-2-1, held LSSU
scoreless on nine power-play chances.
Carter Lee scored his second goal in three games, and Zac MacVoy
tallied his third goal in as many games to lead the Lakers (10-17-8
overall, 7-14-6-1 CCHA). Josh Sim also scored for LSSU.
Lee's first-period goal was unassisted. Troy Schwab and Fred
Cassiani drew assists on MacVoy's goal at 2:04 of the third period.
Will Acton and Steven Kaunisto had assists on Sim's goal at 3:34 of
the third.
Mark Olver scored two goals, and Erik Gustafsson had a goal and
two assists to lead the Wildcats. NMU was 3-for-6 on the power
play, including 2-for-2 in the first period.
LSSU starting goaltender Pat Inglis allowed three goals and had
four saves through 13:42. Brian Mahoney-Wilson gave up four goals
and had 16 saves during the rest of the game. Lake Superior State
out-shot Northern Michigan, 28-27. Brian Stewart totaled 25 saves
for the Wildcats.
LSSU plays its final regular-season game at 7:35 p.m. Saturday
at NMU.
