SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – Northern Michigan clinched game
one, 4-1, of the four-game Cappo Cup series against Lake Superior
State Friday at Taffy Abel Arena. The Lakers are now 0-4-1-0 in the
Central Collegiate Hockey Association and 2-5-2 overall.
LSSU's sophomore forward Domenic Monardo (4-4—8)
scored the Lakers' lone goal. Monardo's 5-on-3 power-play
goal came at 18:30 of the second period and was assisted by Zach
Trotman (3-5—8) and senior forward Rick Schofield
(3-8—11). It trimmed a two-goal Wildcat lead to 2-1.
NMU's Tyler Gron scored the game-winning goal at 12:39 of
the first period. Andrew Cherniwchan, Jared Brown and
Gregor Hanson also scored for the Wildcats (3-2-0-0 CCHA, 3-4-1
overall), while Justin Florek finished with two assists.
At 2:40 of the third period, LSSU's Dan Barczuk received a
hooking penalty during a NMU breakaway leading to a penalty shot by
Phil Fox, who missed. The Lakers were 1-for-6 on the power-play.
They allowed Northern Michigan no power-play attempts.
Netminder Brian Mahoney-Wilson made 25 saves for LSSU, while
NMU's Reid Ellingson saved 42 of 43 shots.
LSSU and NMU play again at 7:05 p.m. Saturday at Abel
Arena.
