Box Score SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - Ninteenth-ranked Lake Superior State
won Game Two of its series against Bowling Green, 4-1, and is 5-1-0
overall and 3-1-0 in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association
heading into next weekend's series at 10th-ranked Miami.
LSSU is currently first in the CCHA standings with nine points,
leading second-place Ferris State and Ohio State by three points.
The Bulldogs swept the highly-touted RedHawks in Big Rapids this
weekend, while OSU split with Michigan State. The Lakers handed
BGSU (4-1-1 overall, 1-1-0 CCHA) its first loss of the season.
LSSU senior defenseman Kyle Haines (1-3--4) scored 22 seconds
into the first period, setting the tone for the Lakers' nearly
total domination of the contest. Senior forward Fred Cassiani
(1-1--2) and senior defender Kyle Pobur (0-1--1) drew assists on a
play that was set up by junior forward Domenic Monardo (2-2--4)
creating traffic in front of the net.
At the 14:07 of the first period, the Lakers took a 2-0 lead
with a power-play goal scored by Monardo and assisted by Haines and
junior defenseman Zach Trotman (2-3--5). Monardo's goal proved to
be the game-winning goal for LSSU.
Lake Superior State out-shot BGSU 16-4 during the first period
and 28-12 through two periods.
BGSU's Marcus Perrier netted the goal at 9:57 of the third
period from Camden Wojtala and Dan DeSalvo. The Falcons trimmed
LSSU's lead to 2-1.
Trotman extended LSSU's lead to 3-1 with a goal at 18:26.
Monardo and freshman forward Stephen Perfetto (0-3--3) drew
assists. Sophomore Colin Campbell (3-0--3) added an empty-netter on
a turnover created by sophomore forward Kyle Jean (4-3--7).
Sophomore goalie Kevin Kapalka (5-1-0) totaled 17 saves for the
Lakers. BGSU's Andrew Hammond made 33 saves. The Lakers' 37-18
domination in shots is the widest margin by the Lakers since they
outshot Notre Dame 46-27 on Jan. 23, 2010.
The Lakers were 1-for-3 on the power-play and held Bowling Green
to 0-for-3.
The Lakers have scored eight first-period goals this season,
averaging 1.33 goals per game through six games. During the second
and third periods combined, they are averaging 1.5 goals per
game.
LSSU will be on the road Oct. 27-28 at Miami.
