Lakers split with Bowling Green

Box Score

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - Ninteenth-ranked Lake Superior State won Game Two of its series against Bowling Green, 4-1, and is 5-1-0 overall and 3-1-0 in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association heading into next weekend's series at 10th-ranked Miami.

LSSU is currently first in the CCHA standings with nine points, leading second-place Ferris State and Ohio State by three points. The Bulldogs swept the highly-touted RedHawks in Big Rapids this weekend, while OSU split with Michigan State. The Lakers handed BGSU (4-1-1 overall, 1-1-0 CCHA) its first loss of the season.

LSSU senior defenseman Kyle Haines (1-3--4) scored 22 seconds into the first period, setting the tone for the Lakers' nearly total domination of the contest. Senior forward Fred Cassiani (1-1--2) and senior defender Kyle Pobur (0-1--1) drew assists on a play that was set up by junior forward Domenic Monardo (2-2--4) creating traffic in front of the net.

At the 14:07 of the first period, the Lakers took a 2-0 lead with a power-play goal scored by Monardo and assisted by Haines and junior defenseman Zach Trotman (2-3--5). Monardo's goal proved to be the game-winning goal for LSSU.

Lake Superior State out-shot BGSU 16-4 during the first period and 28-12 through two periods.

BGSU's Marcus Perrier netted the goal at 9:57 of the third period from Camden Wojtala and Dan DeSalvo. The Falcons trimmed LSSU's lead to 2-1.

Trotman extended LSSU's lead to 3-1 with a goal at 18:26. Monardo and freshman forward Stephen Perfetto (0-3--3) drew assists. Sophomore Colin Campbell (3-0--3) added an empty-netter on a turnover created by sophomore forward Kyle Jean (4-3--7).

Sophomore goalie Kevin Kapalka (5-1-0) totaled 17 saves for the Lakers. BGSU's Andrew Hammond made 33 saves. The Lakers' 37-18 domination in shots is the widest margin by the Lakers since they outshot Notre Dame 46-27 on Jan. 23, 2010.

The Lakers were 1-for-3 on the power-play and held Bowling Green to 0-for-3.

The Lakers have scored eight first-period goals this season, averaging 1.33 goals per game through six games. During the second and third periods combined, they are averaging 1.5 goals per game.
