Box Score SAULT STE. MARIE - Three days after averaging a double double in
points and rebounds at the Timberwolf Classic, junior forward
Derek Kinney had another big night for the Lake Superior State
men's basketball team. The power forward scored a career-high 25
points as the Lakers downed Alma 83-74 during a non-conference game
Tuesday at Bud Cooper Gymnasium.
Kinney was 6-of-10 from the field and 13-of-18 at the free-throw
line. He was one of four Lakers to reach double figures.
Sophomore center Cameron Metz had a double double of 15 points and
a career-high 11 rebounds, while junior guard Khalid Wells and
sophomore guard Derek Billing scored 11 points each.
LSSU (3-0) led 39-28 at halftime and opened the second half with
a 10-0 run. Alma (0-1) trimmed the lead to seven points, 60-53,
with 4:15 remaining. The Lakers hung on thanks to Metz's field goal
at 3:33 and tip-in at 2:47, and 9-of-12 shooting at the
free-throw line during the final two minutes.
Lake Superior State shot 41.1 percent from the field, including
4-of-13 from three-point range, and made 33-of-45 free throws. The
Lakers dominated the boards, 46-26.
Greg Silverthorn was 5-of-11 from behind the arc and scored 17
points to lead Alma. Tyler DeLap was 5-of-8 from three-point range
and added 15 points. Alma shot 48.3 percent from the field
including 14-of-31 from behind the arc (45.2 percent). The Scots
made 4-of-8 free throws.
LSSU plays Edgewood at 7 p.m. Friday at the Merrill Thompson
Memorial Classic hosted by Wisconsin-Superior. Finlandia and
UW-Superior will meet in the other semifinal game.
