Box Score SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - Lake Superior State knocked off No. 2
Notre Dame, 5-2, Saturday at the Taffy Abel Arena to salvage a
crucial Central Collegiate Hockey Association series split and
snap the Fighting Irish 11-game unbeaten streak. The Lakers are
10-4-2 overall and 6-3-1-1 in the CCHA. They moved up one spot
in the CCHA standings to third place with 20 points.
The Lakers are unbeaten during Saturday night play. LSSU
has an overall record during Saturday games of 7-0-1 (4-0-1
against CCHA opponents). Notre Dame still sits in
first place in the CCHA with records of 10-3-3 overall and
7-2-3-0 in the CCHA. The Irish have 24 points, but LSSU and
second-place Ohio State both have two games in hand on UND.
Sophomore forward Kyle Jean (7-5--12) netted LSSU's first goal,
a power-play goal, at 1:37 of the first period. Junior foward
Domenic Monardo (6-7--13) and defender Zach Trotman (6-6--12)
notched the assists on Jean's goal.
Notre Dame tied the game, 1-1, at 5:50 of the first period.
Monardo gave the Lakers a 2-1 lead at 10:02 of the first on a
goal assisted by freshman forward Stephen Perfetto (1-3--4)
and sophomore forward Dan Radke (1-1--2). It was Radke's second
appearance this season since recovering from an injury and last
weekend's illness.
At 2:08 of the second, sophomore forward Kellan Lain (3-2--5)
netted a power-play, game-winning goal on assists from junior
forward Nick McParland (8-6--14) and senior forward Fred Cassiani
(1-7--8). Billy Maday brought the Irish within one goal,
3-2, at the 6:00 of the second period with a power-play
goal.
Trotman answered with a goal at 9:59 of the second, giving
LSSU a 4-2 lead. Jean netted his second goal of the night at 13:39
of the third period by tipping in a shot from senior Kyle
Haines (1-8--9). Sophomore forward Colin Campbell (4-5--9) drew the
other assist.
Sophomore goaltender Kevin Kapalka (9-4-2 overall, 6-3-1-1 CCHA)
totaled 27 saves for the Lakers, while Irish starting
goalie Mike Johnson for the Irish made 10 saves through 10:01
of the second period, recording the loss, and Steven Summerhays
made five saves.
The Lakers were 3-for-4 on the power-play against Notre Dame,
which was their most power-play goals scored since Feb. 4, 2011,
when they were 4-for-8 on the power play during a 4-1
victory over Northern Michigan. LSSU held Notre Dame's
power play to 1-for-5. As of press time, the the Lakers's
penalty kill is ranked ninth nationally.
The Lakers play at Ohio State Dec. 2-3 at 7:05 p.m.
The Buckeyes, who have 23 points in the league standings, own a
nine-game unbeaten streak.
