Box Score UNIVERSITY CENTER - As hard as the Lake Superior State men's
basketball team has worked to come back in games so far this
season, the Lakers have rarely received the big payoff. They fell
82-80 in overtime at Saginaw Valley State on Thursday, suffering
their second straight overtime loss and third in five games.
Saginaw Valley State (3-3 overall, 1-0 Great Lakes
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) took a 37-36 lead with 14:55
remaining in the second half and held the lead until Lake Superior
State senior guard Kyle Hunt canned a three-pointer to tie it,
67-67, with 27 seconds to go.
A back-and-forth overtime session included two free throws by
LSSU sophomore guard Derek Billing for an 80-79 Laker lead with 13
seconds remaining. SVSU's Chris Webb made a desperate three-pointer
for the winning basket with two seconds left. Laker junior Derek
Kinney's long three-pointer clanked off the front of the rim at the
buzzer.
Hunt led LSSU (5-3 overall, 0-1 GLIAC) with 23 points, and
Billing followed with 15. Khalid Wells finished with 13 points and
six rebounds, and Kinney totaled 12 points and a team-leading eight
rebounds.
Hunt and Billing shot a combined 12-of-13 at the free-throw
line. LSSU was 17-of-22 as a team. The Lakers also shot 47.5
percent from the field, including 7-of-18 from three-point range.
They shot 60.9 percent from the field (14-of-23) during the second
half. They out-rebounded SVSU, 37-33.
Webb led SVSU with 23 points, and Greg Foster followed with 20
points and nine rebounds. Michael Fugate contributed 19 points and
six assists before fouling out late in the game. The Cardinals shot
45.8 percent from the field, including 8-of-22 from three-point
range, and made 20-of-29 free throws.
LSSU led 28-27 at halftime.
The Lakers play at 3 p.m. Saturday at Northwood.
