Box Score SAULT STE. MARIE - Lake Superior State, a 38-point loser to
Grand Valley State on the road during an early January contest,
lost Saturday's home rematch with GVSU, 69-63 in overtime.
LSSU (13-8 overall, 7-7 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference) endured a seven-minute scoring drought in the second
half and relinquished a 13-point lead, but had a chance to win the
game in regulation. Lake Superior State missed two free throws with
three seconds remaining and the game tied, 54-54.
GVSU (16-5 overall, 11-3 GLIAC) claimed a quick five-point
lead in overtime on a jumper by Justin Ringler, a LSSU
turnover and a three-pointer by James Thomas. Lake Superior
State cut it to one point, 61-60, on a four-point play by Micah
Hudson at 1:19, but Thomas answered with a three-pointer. Hudson
nailed another three-pointer to trim the lead to 64-63 with 30
seconds remaining. LSSU missed four shots during the final half
minute.
Hudson and Derek Billing scored 18 points each, and Khalid Wells
added 10 to lead LSSU. Billing and Justin Williams led the Lakers
in rebounds with eight each. Billing, who hit a season-high in
points, also had six assists.
Thomas totaled 18 points and 11 assists to lead GVSU. Ringler
added 12 points and eight rebounds. Four GVSU players scored in
double figures.
LSSU shot 41.1 percent from the field, including 11-of-23 from
three-point range. The Lakers made 6-of-11 free
throws. Sixteen turnovers was their second-highest total in
GLIAC play, but they tied a season high of 11 triples. GVSU has
allowed only two GLIAC teams to score 70 or more points this
season.
GVSU shot 42.1 percent from the field, including 8-of-22 from
three-point range, and made 13-of-21 free throws. Grand Valley
State out-rebounded LSSU, 40-35.
LSSU plays host to Northern Michigan at 5:30 p.m. on Feb.
