Box Score ASHLAND, Ohio - Lake Superior State shot an impressive 59
percent from the field during the second half of Saturday's men's
basketball game at Ashland to come back from an 11-point halftime
deficit before losing 78-74 in overtime.
The Lakers (8-9 overall, 3-7 Great Lakes Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference) fell to 0-4 in overtime contests this season,
including two that were league decisions.
LSSU, which trailed by as many as 15 points during the first
half, cut the lead to three points, 32-29, on a Derek Kinney dunk
with 15:41 remaining in the second half. He received a technical
foul right after the play, and Daquavian McCants-Wilson fouled on
the next play, enabling the Eagles to stretch the lead back to
seven points. Ashland (11-6 overall, 6-4 GLIAC) built its lead back
to 11 points, 56-45, with 6:34 to go.
Lake Superior State responded by closing out the first half with
a 13-2 run and tying the game, 58-58, at the end of regulation.
Kyle Hunt, Nic Jobe, Kinney, Khalid Wells and Derek Billing all
contributed to the scoring during the run. Billing scored the
game-tying basket with 10 seconds remaining on a fastbreak layup
after a steal by Hunt.
Hunt made two free throws for a 68-67 LSSU lead with 1:25 left
in overtime, but Ashland answered with a layup by DaWaun Thomas and
two free throws by Will Evans. The Eagles led the rest of the
way.
Evan Yates scored 20 points and Ronnie Steward added 17 to lead
Ashland. Evans finished with 16 points, and Thomas totaled 11
points and eight rebounds. The Eagles shot 44.4 percent from the
field, including 6-of-23 from behind the arc, and made 24-of-31
free throws. They out-rebounded the Lakers, 39-34.
Hunt led LSSU with 21 points, 10 rebounds, five assists and four
steals. Kinney totaled 15 points and six rebounds before fouling
out during overtime. Alex Williams was 4-of-7 from behind the arc
and scored 12 points, and Wells finished with 10.
LSSU shot 44.9 percent from the field, including 6-of-21 from
three-point range, and made 6-of-9 free throws. Lake Superior State
totaled 24 personal fouls to Ashland's 15.
LSSU plays host to Ohio Dominican at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Bud
Cooper Gymnasium. The Lakers will celebrate LSSU Basketball Alumni
Weekend when they meet Tiffin at 3 p.m. Saturday.
