Box Score SAULT STE. MARIE - Lake Superior State set the tone for
Saturday's rematch with Alabama-Huntsville when Ben Power took
advantage of the turnover forced by teammate Austin McKay and
scored 24 seconds into the game.
The Lakers (6-6-0) went on to score three unanswered
first-period goals, out-shot the Chargers 50-25 and beat UAH 4-0.
They split a sixth straight series -- a feat that has never
previously happened at the beginning of a Laker hockey
season.
Junior goaltender Kevin Murdock (4-4-0) stopped all 25 UAH shots
to record his first career shutout.
Chris Ciotti also led LSSU by scoring two goals, including
an unassisted marker at 12:40 of the first period and the
Lakers' fourth goal at 12:23 of the third. Nick McParland and Zach
Sternberg assisted on Ciotti's second goal. Ciotti became
the third Laker this season to score two goals in a single
game (the other two were Dan Radke vs. Alaska and Buddy Robinson
vs. Ferris State).
LSSU's other goal came from Stephen Perfetto, who made it
3-0 at 15:02 of the first period. Kevin Czuczman and Kellan
Lain drew the assists.
LSSU forced the Chargers (1-10-1) into a wide-open
game Saturday after getting bogged down in the neutral zone during
Friday's 2-1 loss. Throughout the weekend, the Lakers
created most of their scoring chances by forcing turnovers in
the Chargers' zone.
Saturday's win was LSSU's first in four home-ice attempts
against the Chargers. The Lakers improved to 3-2-1 in their
all-time series against UAH.
The last time LSSU totaled 50 shots on goal was during a
double-overtime loss at Western Michigan on March 7, 2009. LSSU's
previous three-goal opening period was Dec. 10, 2011, during a 6-3
victory over Northern Michigan.
LSSU plays host to Ohio State Nov. 23-24.
