Box Score SOUTH BEND, Ind. - Notre Dame took advantage of its six
power-play opportunities to edge Lake Superior
State 3-2 Friday at the Charles "Lefty" Smith Rink.
The Lakers fell to 7-8-0 overall and 4-5-0 in the
Central Collegiate Hockey Association, while Notre
Dame improved to 10-4-0 overall and 6-1-0 in the
CCHA.
At 6:25 of the first period, UND's Anders Lee opened the
scoring on assists from Bryan Rust and Jeff Costello.
Thirty-five seconds into the second period the Irish took a 2-0
lead over the Lakers after Mario Lucia scored a power-play
goal.
Junior Kellan Lain (3-2--5) notched the Lakers' first
goal of the game at 5:15 of the second. It was unassisted. The
Irish reclaimed the two-goal lead when Mike Voran
scored their second power-play goal and the game-winner at
7:24 of the second.
LSSU senior forward Domenic Monardo (5-7--12) rounded out the
scoring. Senior forward Nick McParland (4-7--11) assisted on the
goal scored at 13:21 of the second period. Both teams totaled eight
shots on goal during the scoreless third period.
The Lakers were held to 0-for-3 on the power play, while the
Irish were 2-for-6.
Junior netminder Kevin Murdock (4-6-0) suffered the loss for
LSSU, stopping 24 shots on goal through the first two periods
and 32 for the game. Steven Summerhays totaled 18 saves for the
Irish.
UND sports information reported that the Irish won their first
series opener of the season on home ice, improving to 1-3.
"It's a win on Friday night. I'll take it. We wore the golds
tonight to break the routine," UND coach Jeff Jackson said. "Lake
Superior is a good team, a tough team to play against. They have
good goaltending and they bend, but don't break. They picked it up
in the third period and put the pressure on us. It was a close
game, a tough game."
The Lakers and Irish will be back in action Saturday night at
7:05 p.m.
