Box Score SAULT STE. MARIE - Lake Superior State made five of its first
seven three-point attempts to surge to an early 10-point lead
against Findlay, but the Oilers controlled the next 10 minutes
of play to claim the lead and went on to win 75-62 Saturday at
Bud Cooper Gymnasium.
Findlay (20-6 overall, 14-5 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference) overtook the Lakers (11-15 overall, 6-13 GLIAC) with
3:12 remaining in the first half, going ahead 36-33. The
Oilers led 41-33 at halftime.
Lake Superior State cut the lead to 45-44 early in the second
half. A LSSU technical foul at the 16:01 mark led to a four-point
swing and ignited a 9-2 Findlay run from which the Lakers never
recovered.
LSSU senior guard Kyle Hunt fouled out with 4:18 remaining and
received a long standing ovation from a home crowd that appreciated
his four seasons as an impact player. Hunt finished with nine
points and five assists for the day. Senior center Mike Boylan came
out during the final minute of the game after converting a
three-point play and also received a round of applause. Boylan
totaled five points, two rebounds and one assist.
Sophomore guard Derek Billing led LSSU with 22 points, and
junior forward Derek Kinney followed with 12 points and eight
rebounds. LSSU shot 47.7 percent from the field, including 7-of-15
from behind the arc, and made 13-of-21 free throws.
Kyle Caiola totaled 24 points, six rebounds and five assists to
lead four double-figure scorers for Findlay. The Oilers shot 46.3
percent from the field, including 9-of-22 from three-point range,
and made 16-of-22 free throws.
Both teams totaled 31 rebounds.
