Box Score KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Lake Superior State continued its
unbeaten streak with a 1-1 tie and 2-1 shootout victory over
10th-ranked Western Michigan Friday at Lawson Arena. The Lakers
(12-10-1 overall, 7-7-1-1 Central Collegiate Hockey Association)
won their first shootout since beating Ohio State on Jan. 28,
2012.
LSSU, which is 5-0-1 in its last six games, sits in fifth
place in the CCHA with 23 points after playing to its
first shootout of the season. The Broncos (12-5-4 overall,
8-3-2-1 CCHA) sit in third place with 27 points
after earning only 1 point for the tie.
The Lakers fell behind 1-0 at 7:03 of the first period when the
Broncos opened the scoring with a goal from Dane Walters assisted
by Mike Cichy and Kenney Morrison.
With only 29 seconds left in the first period,
LSSU sophomore forward Buddy Robinson (7-5—12)
tied it, 1-1. Freshman defenseman Eric Drapluk (1-6—7)
tallied the lone assist on Robinson's goal. Robinson has
tallied one goal in each of the Lakers' last three
outings.
LSSU and WMU played 40 minutes of scoreless play before entering
the five-minute sudden death overtime. At the end of OT the game
was still tied 1-1 and headed into the shootout, leaving the
stellar Laker defense with only four goals-against during
the past six games.
Mike Leone scored on WMU's first shootout attempt. Junior foward
Dan Radke (3-6--9) missed for the Lakers. In the second round,
Western Michigan's Dennis Brown missed, while LSSU senior
forward Domenic Monardo (8-9—17) tied the shootout, 1-1, with
his goal.
In round three, Chase Balisy missed for the
Broncos and senior forward Ben Power (3-3—6) scored the
shootout winner for the Lakers.
Junior netminder Kevin Kapalka (5-4-1-1), who was 4-0 in CCHA
shootouts in 2011-12, totaled a season-high 44 saves for
the Lakers while playing in front of a sellout Bronco crowd of
4,179. Frank Slubowski (12-5-4) tallied 24 saves in the shootout
loss.
WMU was 0-for-5 on the power play, and LSSU finished
0-for-3.
