Box Score SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - Lake Superior State ended its first
Western Collegiate Hockey Association series with a split against
Alaska after losing 3-2 in overtime Saturday at Taffy Abel
Arena.
Senior goalie Kevin Kapalka suffered his first loss of the
season despite an impressive 37-save performance for LSSU (5-2-1).
Kapalka is 2-1-1 overall.
UAF (5-3-2 overall, 2-2-0 WCHA) opened the scoring with a
power-play goal by Cody Kunyk at 4:54 of the first
period. Sophomore defenseman Eric Drapluk (3-1--4) tallied the
Lakers' first goal, a power-play goal, at 17:38 of the first from
junior defender Kevin Czuczman (3-5--8).
At 4:27 of the second the Nanooks' Marcus Basara scored for
a 2-1 Alaska lead. LSSU freshman forward Alex Globke (5-6--11)
forced the sudden-death overtime with a goal at 18:36 of the
third, shortly after the Lakers killed off a penalty. He drew
assists from Czuczman and senior forward Dan Radke (1-8--9).
The Lakers were unable to fight off the Nanooks. Joey Davies
tallied the game-winning goal thanks to a rebound that deflected
off a Laker defender at 2:41 of the overtime.
John Keeney (3-1-1) recorded the win for Alaska, making 27
saves. The Lakers and Alaska both went 1-for-5 on the
power-play.
The Lakers play at Michigan Tech Nov. 15-16.
