Luke Vega scored twice, contributing to all three LSSU goals on Saturday night as Lake Superior State swept aside Bowling Green in ACHA Division II Men's Ice Hockey.
The first-year player from Grand Rapids, MI continues to shine for LSSU (5-5) in his first ten games. Averaging over a point-per-game, he's struck for an 8-7-15 line in ten contests. He played a key role in the pair of Laker wins, 6-3 on Friday and 3-1 on Saturday, adding an assist in the Friday game.
Bowling Green (0-10) took a lead in the first period of Friday's game, before the Lakers obliterated them in the second period. Goals from
Nate Korowin, Adam Trzcinksi,
Seth Stock,
Charlie Sullivan and Chris Kavanaugh put the Lakers well in control by the end of the 20-minute session. Though the Falcons scored twice in the period, briefly tying the game back up at 3-3, they were unable to stem the tide of the Lakers. The offensive onslaught was characteristic of head coach Steve Kaunisto's team this season. LSSU has five players averaging over a point-per-game. Stock and
Derrick Brown average over two points-per-contest.
On Saturday, Vega put on a show. While BGSU took a first period lead, he scored in the second to tie the score at 1-1 with an assist from
Robert Poliski. Kavanaugh put the Lakers ahead late in the period, on a powerplay goal from Trzcinski and Vega. LSSU never relinquished its lead, and Vega added another tally with five seconds remaining in the contest.
The Lakers remain on the road, playing at Adrian College this weekend. Opening faceoffs are set for Friday at 7:00 PM and Saturday at 3:00 PM at Arrington Ice Arena. Then the Lakers head home the following weekend, hosting Michigan Tech at Taffy Abel Arena. Fans see all Laker ACHA Men's and Women's home games at Taffy Abel Arena for free.
