Another feisty game between Lake Superior State and Sault College. That's nothing new.
Both teams took several penalties at the beginning of the third period on Sunday afternoon. Sault College took the result, with a 4-0 win over the Lakers at Taffy Abel Arena in Sault Ste. Marie, MI.
The Cougars (6-3) got a pair of first period goals to take the advantage. Strikes from Jacob Kovacs and Dylan Winsor put the visitors ahead, and Winsor added another in the second period. In the third, Caleb Wood scored late to put the game away.
While much of the contest remained penalty-free, a skirmish after the second period led to a Cougars game misconduct and coincidental minor penalties were assessed. The prior series, played earlier this season, saw hard-hitting, rough-and-tumble hockey, complete with plenty of chirping.Â
Sean Piotrowicz made 24 saves for the Lakers, who put 39 pucks on target on the other end. Despite LSSU's excellent offensive output, Cougars goaltender Kennan Marks was outstanding, earning his first shutout of the season.
The Lakers hit the road next weekend as they travel to Marquette, MI to face Northern Michigan. The Lakers steamrolled the Wildcats in the Soo to open the season, 12-1 and 6-3.
