Seyyane Matthew hit all the right notes on Thursday night against Northern Michigan. The first-year player for Lake Superior State picked her spots and attacked with poise and confidence in a big U.P. rivalry game, scoring a career-high 18 points with two rebounds, an assist, and two blocked shots.
Always a presence in the inside game, she led the contest off with a three-pointer on the opening possession. She hit another later in the game as part of an overall 7-of-10 shooting night for the Lakers (4-11, 1-6 GLIAC) in an 80-61 loss to NMU (14-3, 5-2 GLIAC). The Wildcats struggled to account for Matthew's play in the paint or on the perimeter in a breakout performance.
With her combination of length, agility and strength, Matthew showed her high-end ability against one of the GLIAC's top teams. NMU entered the game ranked 13th in the WBCA national rankings.
Lara Aguzzi scored eight for the Lakers, hitting a pair of triples in the game.
LSSU shot 53% from the field in the second quarter, connecting on two three-pointers as well. Matthew hit her second of the game to lead off the quarter, then closed it out with a pair of layups.
Halen McLaughlin hit a three as well in an entertaining quarter of college basketball.
NMU typically shoots well from the range, but Lake State held the visitors to 18.2% from deep in the contest. Both teams shot very well from the field in the opening half before locking each other down in the second half. The Lakers held NMU to 40% shooting in the third quarter (and 0-6 from three) and 33% in the fourth.
The Lakers host Michigan Tech on Saturday at 1:00 PM as rivalry week continues in Sault Ste. Marie. Buy your tickets now online, or get them at the Norris Center box office.
