Lake Superior State shot the ball well against Michigan Tech, and
Dara Capaldi scored 23 points on Saturday afternoon at the Bud Cooper Gymnasium. While the Huskies (11-5, 5-3 GLIAC) won the game 68-57, the Lakers (4-12, 1-7 GLIAC) showed their grit and determination throughout.
Capaldi's 23 points came with eight rebounds, six assists and a steal in 40 minutes of action. She shot 9-of-14 from the floor and tied her career high in points at LSSU, which she initially set against Tiffin on November 20th. She played a quality inside--out game, hitting two of her four shots from deep while attacking the bucket efficiently and passing well, too. Capaldi's six helpers are a new career-high.
Grace Bradford scored 15 for LSSU and grabbed six boards. She sits at 966 rebounds as she closes in on the school record of 1,000, held by Marti Wallace ('83), a Class of 1997 Hall of Famer. Bradford also blocked a shot and stole the ball once, while adding three assists. It was another complete performance by the senior, who remains one of the steadiest players in the GLIAC. She was excellent shooting the ball, too. Bradford connected on three of her seven shots from beyond the arc and hit six of 12 field goal attempts overall.
The Lakers shot the ball in the middle quarters, hitting 50% of their field goals in the second quarter and 53% in the third. While the Huskies took the lead at 12-3, Bradford got LSSU back to within four points on a third quarter three-pointer, nearly wiping out the entirety of a lead that had gone as high as 14 points by MTU.
Makenna Clement started the play with an offensive rebound, creating the shot for Bradford on the perimeter moments later. Clement finished 3-for-3 with seven points and a pair of assists.
Seyyane Matthew registered three blocks in the game, while
Lara Aguzzi swatted two shots away. Matthew is tied forr second in the GLIAC with 18 shots returned to sender this season. Her length and footwork create problems for attacking players near the rim.
A great crowd saw the game at Bud Cooper Gymnasium, and Laker fans created a great atmosphere in a well-played college basketball game. Lake State heads to Saginaw Valley State on Thursday, then plays Ferris State on Saturday before returning home the following week for games against Roosevelt and Wisconsin Parkside.
