Box Score Great shooting did the job as Lake Superior State beat Saginaw Valley State 79-73 at the James E. O'Neill Jr. Arena in University Center, MI Thursday night.
LSSU (5-12, 2-7 GLIAC) shot 51.1% from the field and hit seven three-pointers in the game, including three in the fourth quarter. SVSU (4-13, 2-7 GLIAC) struggled to stop the Laker offense late, as LSSU went 6-of-10 from the field in the fourth, 3-for-4 from deep, and 8-of-10 at the free throw line.
Grace Bradford led the way with 22 points on a terrific 8-of-14 shooting line. She also hit all six free throw attempts. Bradford also grabbed nine rebounds, passed for an assist, stole the ball once and blocked a shot.
Dara Capaldi was excellent, scoring 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting. She hit a pair of triples in the game, too.
Seyyane Matthew and
Chloe Watson each scored 12, continuing their excellent play from last weekend.
Clare Conzelmann added 11 points for LSSU.
The Lakers blocked seven shots, including three by Matthew. She's blocked 21 shots in 17 games, a phenomenal rate by the first-year forward. It's her third straight game with multiple blocked shots.
The Lakers trailed by four early in the fourth quarter, but Capaldi scored in the paint, then Watson hit a three and a two to put the Lakers ahead with around six minutes remaining. Though the Cardinals never let the lead grow to more than six, they also never closed the gap. Lake State took the lead on Watson's three with 6:01 left and never relinquished it.
LSSU stays on the road, heading to Ferris State on Saturday. Then the Lakers head home to play Roosevelt and Wisconsin Parkside next weekend. Buy your tickets online or at the Norris Center box office.
