Box Score Lake Superior State got great outings from several key players on Thursday night at the Bud Cooper Gymnasium, but the Lakers dropped a 75-68 result to Roosevelt in GLIAC play.
Seyyane Matthew scored 14 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for LSSU (5-14, 2-9 GLIAC), the second career double-double by the first-year player from Brampton, Ontario, Canada.
Grace Bradford shot 7-of-9 from the floor for 18 points, and
Dara Capaldi knocked down 19 points with seven rebounds.
The Lakers shot a ridiculous 80% from the field in the second quarter, hitting four of their five attempted three-pointers. LSSU shot very well in the third quarter as well. Defensively, the home Lakers held Roosevelt (5-13, 4-7 GLIAC) to under 30% shooting in every quarter but the second. The game was tight going into the fourth quarter, but LSSU held a 51-45 lead after a 6-0 run to close the third.
But the fourth quarter saw LSSU called for 16 fouls, with Roosevelt shooting 25 free throws. The visitors were called on seven fouls, with Lake State shooting nine foul shots. Roosevelt took the lead midway through the fourth on an 8-0 run, all at the free throw line.
LSSU outscored Roosevelt 26-16 in the paint, as the Lakers attacked inside with regularity. Lake State also stole the ball eight times, with two each by
Clare Conzelmann,
Malia Thelen and
Halen McLaughlin. Matthew blocked two shots, her seventh multi-block game and fifth straight game with a swatted shot.
