Lake Superior State's ACHA Division II Men's Hockey team rolled into Springfield, OH to face Wittenberg University twice this weekend. For the third time in just over a week, the Lakers demolished the Tigers, obliterating them 22-1 on Friday night and 7-0 on Saturday afternoon. They'd also beaten Wittenberg 9-1 last weekend at the season-opening Trine Showcase.
The Lakers (4-1) totaled 29 points in two games this weekend with 15 different scorers, 13 on Friday alone.
It wasn't a great night for scorekeepers trying to stave off wrist soreness.
"No, but it was good for us obviously," said Laker Head Coach Steve Kaunisto. "With them being a new program, we were in the same situation when we first started. You have your growing pains. You're going to have good nights and bad nights. It just didn't go their way but it went our way really well."
Did it ever. Seth Stock and Robert Poliski each had six point nights. Poliski scored four goals for LSSU. Brayden Anderson assisted four goals and scored another himself. The Lakers (4-1) held a 10-0 lead on the Tigers (0-5) at the end of the first.
"We were able to work on quite a bit of stuff," said Kaunisto. "They're able to read off of each other a bit more."Â
On Saturday, Seth Stock, Adam Trzcinski, and Derrick Brown all scored goals in the opening period. Nick Wood and Max Wright added strikes in the second, while Blaine Dorion and Marlo Savino scored in the third. Garrett Ambrose got the nod at goalie, he tallied eight saves and pitched a shutout.Â
First-year Forward Wright was among the standouts for Lake Superior State this weekend. "He played really solid, consistent, kept things simple and hard," noted Kaunisto. "Being a younger guy on the team, he's really stepping into that role and finding himself the last few games." Wright totaled two goals and three assists for the weekend.
Kaylan Campbell made 10 saves in his Laker debut to open against Wittenberg on Friday.
The Lakers have next weekend off as they prepare to host Bowling Green on October 16th and 17th.Â
"I really like where we're at heading into the next part of the season," said Kaunisto. "We have Bowling Green and then get into the depth of our schedule with teams like Schoolcraft and Sault College, teams that will be at Regionals. I'm really looking forward to getting to those and seeing what we're able to do."
