COLUMBUS, Ohio - After six stright meetings
with Ohio State, during which the score differential averaged 1.33
goals per game, the Lake Superior State hockey team ignited
offensively for a 7-3 win Friday at Value City Arena.
Junior Nathan Perkovich, sophomore Chad Nehring and freshman
Fred Cassiani scored two goals each as the Lakers won their Central
Collegiate Hockey Association opener. They improved to 1-1-1
overall.
Perkovich also had two assists to total four points in the game.
Nehring's goal 27 seconds into the third period sealed the deal
for LSSU. His second goal of the game gave the Lakers a 5-3
lead. Both of Nehring's goals made up for Ohio State's first
goal, which was scored against Nehring's line during the
game-opening faceoff.
Nehring, Cassiani and Perkovich scored three LSSU goals during a
5:16 span early in the first period to negate OSU's early 1-0 lead.
Ohio State's Peter Boyd cut the lead to 3-2 with a power-play goal
at 18:35 of the opening period.
LSSU's Dan Barczuk and Ohio State's Corey Elkins traded goals in
the second period, leaving the Lakers with a 4-3 lead.
After Nehring made it 5-3 early in the third period, Cassiani
added his second goal of the game and second goal as a Laker at
1:58. Perkovich finished off the scoring with his second power-play
goal of the game at 14:44.
LSSU finished 2-for-6 on the power play, while Ohio State (0-2-1
overall, 0-2-1-1 CCHA) was 1-for-7.
Laker sophomore goaltender Brian Mahoney-Wilson totaled 37
saves, including 15 in the second period and 15 in the third.
OSU starting goaltender Jospeh Palmer gave up four goals and
totaled 16 saves through 31:27. Dustin Carlson allowed two goals
and had four saves during a 10:31 span in the second period. Cal
Heeter allowed one goal and totaled 10 saves in the third period.
Ohio State out-shot LSSU, 40-37.
Junior defenseman Steven Kaunisto led the Lakers in assists with
three. John Scrymgeour, Tyson Hobbins, Troy Schwab, Rick Schofield,
Zac MacVoy, Pat Aubry, Steve Oleksy, Will Acton and Simon Gysbers
had one assist each.
"We had a tough two games last weekend so it was nice for us to
get a couple of bounces around the net this weekend," LSSU coach
Jim Roque said. "We try to have three lines that can score. To have
our fourth line scoring -- that was a little something extra."
MacVoy and Acton have recorded a point in all three Laker games
so far this season.
"Lake Superior played a good game," OSU coach John Markell said.
"They were stronger than we were and buried their chances. We have
to learn how to fight back in games like these."
The Lakers and Buckeyes face off again Saturday at 8:05 p.m. The
teams have split their last two series, both of which were played
in Sault Ste. Marie.
