SAULT STE. MARIE - Lake Superior State followed
Saturday's 7-0 exhibition victory over Windsor with a 7-3
exhibition win Sunday at home against the U.S. National Team
Development Program's Under-18 team.
The Lakers beat the U.S. Under-18 team for the first time in
school history, improving its record against U.S.A. to 1-2-3. The
U-18s, who also lost 4-3 at Michigan Tech on Friday, dropped
to 4-4-1 this season against NCAA opponents.
Will Acton scored two goals, Rick Schofield had a goal and two
assists, and Zac MacVoy contributed four assists to lead the
Lakers.
LSSU was 4-for-9 on the power-play, getting man-advantage goals
from Josh Sim in the first period, Acton in the second period, and
Brad Cooper and Schofield in the third. Matt Cowie and Nathan
Perkovich added even-strength goals.
LSSU led 2-1 after a close first period and 4-1 through two
periods. Team U.S.A.'s Jeremy Morin and Nick Mattson scored goals
at 6:40 and 7:09 of the third period to trim the Lakers' lead to
4-3. Perkovich quickly answered by punching in a goal at 9:11, and
LSSU dominated the final 10 minutes of the game.
Lake Superior State out-shot the U.S., 35-22. Starting Laker
goaltender Pat Inglis allowed one goal and totaled 11 saves through
29:20. Brian Mahoney-Wilson had eight saves and gave up two goals
during the final 30:40.
Steven Kaunisto, Troy Schwab and Simon Gysbers added
assists for LSSU.
Team U.S.A. finished 1-for-5 on the power play.
The Lakers resume Central Collegiate Hockey Association play at
7:05 p.m. Friday at Ferris State.
