LANSING - Lake Superior State lost 5-0 to No. 2 seed Grand
Valley State and dropped a 5-3 decision to No. 6 seed Ferris State
during the first day of competition at the Great Lakes
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Women's Tennis Championship.
GVSU (8-2) swept doubles and claimed wins at Nos. 1 and 3
singles to secure a quarterfinal victory.
LSSU's No. 1 doubles team of Adrienne DiVito and Carolyn Pumford
defeated Ferris State's Amy Ingle and Tiffany Rheynard 9-8 with a
5-0 win in the tie-breaker to give the Lakers their first win of
the day during the consolation round. Pumford also won 7-6 (4-0),
6-1 in her No. 3 singles match against the
Bulldogs to finish 2-1 for the day. She did not complete her
singles match against GVSU.
Ferris State improved to 5-5.
Lake Superior State ended its fall season with a 6-8
record and finished seventh in the GLIAC
standings after shutting out Findlay 5-0 Sunday
during the final consolation round.
At No. 1 singles, DiVito won her match, 6-3, 6-2. No. 6 singles,
Katie Watchorn defeated Findlay in a third-set tiebreaker, 3-6, 6-4
(6-0). Lake State's No. 1 doubles team of DiVito and
Pumford won 8-3, while Ingrid Pflieger and Erin Wiethoff
claimed an 8-2 No. 2 doubles victory, and Watchorn and
Anais Molina-Rodriguez won 8-4 at No. 3.
The Lakers will resume their dual match schedule in
March.
