Box Score 3 HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – The Lake Superior State women's tennis team (3-4) came away with a successful week on Hilton Head Island, splitting their four matches on the week.
The women's program opened up their week with a Sunday doubleheader against Tiffin and Florida Southern. The Lakers would get a couple of strong singles performances in their first match from senior
Maddie Whip (Sydney, Australia) and junior
Martina Oviedo (Cordoba, Argentina) who each earned wins at the No. 1 and No. 6 spots, respectively. However, Tiffin was able to take the remaining matches to claim a 5-2 victory on the day. Then, the Lakers would battle hard before ultimately falling 7-0 against Florida Southern that afternoon.
On Wednesday, the Lakers bounced back with a dominant 7-0 performance over NAIA Shawnee State to help build momentum going into their final match of the week.
Then on Friday, the Lakers wrapped up a match against Morningside that was previously started earlier that week before being postponed due to rain. Prior to the rain delay, both teams were split 1-1 during doubles play with LSSU having earned an emphatic 6-0 victory at the No. 3 spot from Oviedo and
Kyna Decruy (Melbourne, Australia). However, despite a hard-fought battle to force a tiebreaker in the top match, Morningside managed to take the doubles point. However, the Lakers responded in force during singles play, taking all six matches to earn their second team victory on the week.
The Lakers will now turn their attention to GLIAC play when they travel to face the Ferris State Bulldogs on Friday, March 21 with the first serve scheduled for 12 p.m.
