Box Score INDIANAPOLIS - Lake Superior State survived a test of wills as
LSSU and Indianapolis struggled with missed shots, particularly at
the free-throw line, Friday during the first round of the Nicoson
Basketball Classic.
LSSU (5-1) made the most of a timely run and hung on to win
64-62. The Lakers handed Indy (3-1) its first loss of the
season.
The Lakers, who trailed 26-25 at halftime, got a
three-point play and two free throws from junior forward Nic
Jobe to lead 47-43 with 7:54 remaining in the second
half. Sophomore guard Derek Billing canned a fast-break
three-pointer after an Indy turnover, capping an 8-0 LSSU run at
the 6:51 mark. Daquavion McCants-Wilson fed the ball to Billing,
who led the Lakers with 21 points.
A Mike Boylan tip-in, followed by a Billing steal and
lay-up, and a Kyle Hunt free throw gave LSSU its biggest lead,
59-50, with 2:52 to go.
Lake Superior State was 3-for-8 at the free-throw line during
the final minute, allowing the Greyhounds to chip away at the lead.
With less than two seconds remaining, Laker Khalid Wells missed the
first of two free throws, but purposely missed the second, forcing
time to expire on the ensuing rebound.
Hunt finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds, and Wells added 10
points and six rebounds. LSSU shot 38.7 percent from the field,
including 6-of-24 from behind the arc, and made 10-of-22 free
throws. The Lakers out-rebounded Indy, 49-40.
Adrian Moss totaled 23 points and eight assists to lead the
Greyhounds. Indy shot 33.3 percent from the field, including
6-of-21 from behind the arc, and made 14-of-24 free throws.
Starters Cameron Metz and Derek Kinney of LSSU and Wilbur O'Neal
of Indianapolis fouled out. All were post players.
The Lakers meet St. Joseph's at 1 p.m. Saturday during the
second day of tournament action.
