Lakers open with a 4-2 victory

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - Lake Superior State opened the 2012-13 season with a 4-2 victory over the Michigan Tech Huskies Thursday at the Taffy Abel Arena. The Lakers travel to Houghton at 7:07 p.m. Saturday to wrap up the home-and-home series.

LSSU's 4-2 victory is its first home victory over the Huskies since the 1998-99 season when the Lakers won 5-4. They were 1-3 against MTU during the four-year run of the Superior Cup, which ended after the 2010-11 season.

Junior forward Kellan Lain (1-1--2) opened the scoring with a goal 41 seconds into the game. Lain's goal was assisted by senior forward Domenic Monardo (0-2--2). The Huskies tied the game at 4:08 of the second with a goal from Blake Pietila from Milos Gordic and Tanner Kero.

At 2:58 of the third MTU took a 2-1 lead with a power-play goal from Dennis Rix. Sophomore Stephen Perfetto (1-1--2) tied the game 2-2 at 6:37 of the third with a goal, which was assisted by Lain and freshman forward Zach Loesch (0-1--1).

LSSU took the 3-2 lead at 12:21 of the third with a power-play goal by senior forward Nick McParland (1-0--1). Junior defenseman Zach Sternberg (0-1--1) and sophomore forward Chris Ciotti (0-1--1) tallied the assists on McParland's goal.

Freshman forward Eric Drapluk scored his first goal as a Laker at 15:31 of the third period. Drapluk's goal was assisted by Perfetto and Monardo.

Pheonix Copley (0-1-0 overall) totaled 18 saves for the Huskies while junior netminder Kevin Kapalka (1-0-0 overall) made 31 saves for the Lakers. The Lakers were 1-for-6 on the power-play and held MTU to 1-for-5.

The Lakers return to the Taffy Abel Arena Oct. 26 to host Michigan State during Great Lake State Weekend.
