SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - Captain Domenic Monardo led the charge for the Lake Superior State hockey team's first victory over Michigan since 2007. Monardo scored two goals and assisted on the other as LSSU beat the Wolverines 3-2 Saturday at Taffy Abel Arena to split the weekend series.

LSSU (13-12-1 overall, 8-9-1-1 Central Collegiate Hockey Association) snapped a 16-game winless streak against U-M (8-14-2 overall, 5-11-2-2 CCHA). The Lakers, however, are 1-1-1-1 in their last three games against the Wolverines.

After struggling with turnovers during Friday's 6-4 loss, the Laker defense rebounded with an impressive team effort. LSSU out-shot Michigan 38-37 and held U-M to 1-for-5 on the power play. Junior goaltender Kevin Murdock improved to 8-7 after totaling 35 saves.

Michigan opened the scoring with a power-play goal by Cristoval Nieves at 5:59 of the first period. The goal came with one second remaining in a 5-on-3 power play.

LSSU's Kellan Lain tipped in a Monardo shot to tie it 1-1 at 18:55 of the first period.

Michigan regained the one-goal lead when A.J. Treais scored at 11:09 of the second period. Monardo answered with the Lakers' lone power-play goal of the night at 14:20. Eric Drapluk had the assist.

Monardo's 12th goal of the season was his fourth game-winner. He scored at 6:57 of the third as Kevin Czuczman and Dan Radke picked up assists.

Monardo moved up to second in the CCHA in goals scored and first in game-winning goals. He now has an amazing nine game-winning goals during the last two seasons.

Adam Janecyk (3-5) totaled 35 saves for Michigan, which is 1-4 in its last five games.

LSSU plays at Ohio State on Jan. 25-26.
