Box Score SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - Thanks to another superb night of
penalty killing and a few timely shots off the crossbar, Lake
Superior State topped No. 13 Union 4-1 at the Taffy Abel Arena
Friday.
Junior defender Zach Sternberg (3-9--12) netted LSSU's first
goal of the night on assists from senior forward Domenic
Monardo (7-9--16) and junior forward Dan Radke (3-5--8) at 2:17 of
the first period. Union (9-5-4) answered with its lone
goal of the game at 3:35 of the first from Matt Wilkins
and assisted by Mat Bodie.
The Lakers (11-10-0) came back with their game-winning goal
at 12:08 of the first. Junior forward Kellan Lain (5-5--10) won the
faceoff in Union's zone and notched the lone assist
on Monardo's game-winner.
LSSU took at 3-1 lead at 8:58 of the second period
when sophomore forward Buddy Robinson (5-5--10) found
the back of the net. Senior forward Nick McParland (6-12--18)
and junior defenseman Andrew Perrault (0-5--5) drew the
assists.
McParland tallied an empty-net goal at 18:32 of the third
to complete the scoring. Robinson had the assist.
The Lakers killed off five Union power-plays,
extending their penalty-kill run to 29 straight. Union owns
the nation's top-ranked power play at 26.8 percent.
LSSU was 0-for-2 on the power-play.
Junior netminder Kevin Kapalka (5-4-0) made 22 saves for the
Lakers while Troy Grosenick (5-4-4) totaled 23 saves in the loss.
The Dutchmen hit the post or crossbar four times during the
contest.
LSSU and Union meet again at 7:05 p.m. Saturday.
