Box Score HUNTSVILLE, Ala.- Lake Superior State finished off the weekend
with a 3-2 win at Alabama-Huntsville Saturday for the first sweep
since Nov. 29-30.
The Lakers (16-15-1, 12-12-1 Western Collegiate Hockey
Association) got a goal midway through the third period by senior
Dan Radke (6-16--22) to take the decisive one-goal lead
over the Chargers.
The Lakers got on the board first with a goal in the first
period by freshman Ian
Miller (5-3--8) with the assist from Gus
Correale (2-2--4). The Chargers answered with 28 seconds left
in the first with a goal by Jeff Vanderlugt. The first period ended
in a deadlock and both squads registering nine shots on goal.
At 2:23 minutes of the second period the Chargers gained their
only lead of the game on a Matt Salhany goal. Junior forward Stephen Perfetto (7-13--20) knotted the game, 2-2, with
his second goal of the weekend with an assist from Colin Campbell (11-14--25). Once again, the score was
tied at the end of the period, but this time the Lakers outshot the
Chargers 19-6.
With only 9:21 minutes remaining in regulation Radke scored the game-winner for the Lakers. Captain Matt Bruneteau (1-3--4) was credited with an assist, Campbell also earned an assist giving him his second
point of the evening.
Kevin Kapalka (9-5-1) closed the door when the
game was on the line. Kapalka went on to make 18 saves. His counterpart,
Carmine Guerriero made 36 saves to keep his Chargers within reach
late in the game.
Kapalka, who missed 10 games due to injury, surpassed the 3,000
career saves milestone during the series at UAH. He ranks third in
career saves at LSSU with 3,027 and sixth in career wins with
45.
The Lakers out-shot the Chargers 39-20. Lake Superior State
finished 0-2 on the power play while killing off all three
opportunities for the Chargers.
The Lakers are back home next weekend where they will face
Minnesota State-Mankato. Friday's game will start at 7:37 p.m. ET
and Saturday's game is slated for 7:07 p.m. ET.
Saturday's game is also Senior Night as the Lakers will pay
tribute to Radke, Campbell, Kapalka, Bruneteau, Niels-Erik Ravn,
Kevin Murdock, Zach Sternberg and Andrew Perrault. All tickets are
$5 for Saturday's game. Both games will be broadcast live on 99.5
YES FM and America One Sports pay-per-view online streaming.
