Box Score BIG RAPIDS, Mich.- Lake Superior State (16-18-1, 12-15-0 WCHA)
dropped the first game of a two-game tilt to the seventh-ranked
Ferris State Bulldogs (24-9-3, 18-6-2 WCHA) by a score of 2-1.
The Lakers now must at least tie with the Bulldogs on Saturday
night and hope for a Bowling Green sweep of Bemidji State if they
want to punch their tickets to the Western Collegiate Hockey
Association's Playoffs.
The Bulldogs took the lead late in the first period with a
power-play goal from senior center-man Corey Kane, his
12th of the season. Scott Czarnowczan and Jason Binkley
combined for the assists on the first tally. The Lakers went into
the locker room with a 12-9 lead in shots on goal but trailed in
the score column.
Kyle Schemp picked up his eighth goal of the year with a shot
that deflected off Laker Matt Bruneteau 9:47 minutes into the second period,
giving his Bulldogs a 2-0 lead. The goal was the deciding factor in
the game as the Lakers could only muster the lone goal from Colin Campbell (13-15—28) with 7:52 remaining in
the second frame. Dan
Radke (6-20—26) picked up the lone assist on the
goal.
Closing the door on the Lakers was WCHA Goaltender of the Year
candidate C. J. Motte (23-7-3), who made 32 saves on 33 shots
faced. Motte kept the Lakers in check for most of the game as the
Lakers came out fighting hard for a playoff spot and creating a
flurry of scoring opportunities.
Kevin Kapalka (9-8-1) made the start for the
Lakers and kept them in the game against one of the highest scoring
teams in the WCHA. Kapalka turned away 42 shots on the 44 that he
saw. The Lakers went 0-for-3 on power-play opportunities while
Ferris finished 1-for-5.
The Lakers will be back in action Saturday night looking to pick
up precious points in a last-ditch effort for a WCHA playoff bid.
The game will be available on 99.5 YES FM and America One for a
pay-per-view video stream. Puck drop is slated for 7:07 p.m.
ET.
