SAULT STE. MARIE, MIch. – The Lake Superior State women's tennis team took on the Purdue Northwest Pride in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play on Saturday, October 14th at the Student Activities Center within the LSSU Norris Center.  The Lakers (2-8, 1-7 GLIAC) swept the Pride (5-6, 0-6 GLIAC) 9-0 for their first GLIAC win of the season.

"This was a great team win for us," said Lakers head coach Luke Ogren.  "It feels great to get that first league win."

Starting off in the doubles portion, the number one pairing of Tara Harvey and Macarena Bielsa defeated the Pride's Lena van Bergen 8-5.  Allison Grandfield and AlexiAnn Drouin kept things going for Lake Superior with an 8-1 win over Carolina Yepez and Cynthia Basu-Chavez.  Completing the doubles sweep for the Lakers were Laura Valderrama and Jenay Andrews, who downed Anna Wachowski and Abby Kvachkoff by the same 8-1 score as seen at number two doubles.

Lake Superior continued their fine play in singles, as Drouin, the freshman from St. George's, Quebec, defeated van Bergen 6-1, 6-0.  Harvey then followed up with a 6-1, 6-3 victory in the number two slot against Foltz. 

Bielsa and Valderrama, natives of Madrid, Spain, kept the Lakers rolling along, with Bielsa notching a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Yepez, and Valderrama defeating Basu-Chavez in the number four spot, 6-2, 6-1.

Finishing the day for the Lakers, Grandfield and Andrews each came away with victories in the five and six spots, respectively.  Grandfield defeated Wachowski 6-1, 6-1, while Andrews downed Kvachkoff 6-0, 5-7, 10-8.

The Lakers are back in action on Sunday, October 15th at the Student Activities Center.  The match is set to begin at 10 a.m. against GLIAC foe Davenport.  The Panthers (1-5, 1-5 GLIAC) are coming off of a 9-0 loss to Michigan Tech.
