DETROIT, Mich. – The Lake Superior State University women's tennis team began Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play this Friday (Sept. 15) afternoon by suffering a 9-0 road loss to Wayne State University at the WSU Tennis Courts in Detroit, Mich.
In doubles, junior Tara Harvey and senior Macarena Bielsa lost in the top flight with an 8-6 setback to Dasha Kuznetsova and Liz Ghellere.
Freshman AlexiAnn Drouin and junior Allison Grandfield fell to their second flight doubles counterparts by an 8-5 score. At three doubles, junior Jenay Andrews and senior Laura (Fernandez) Valderrama were on the back end of an 8-3 decision.
In singles, AlexiAnn Drouin suffered a loss at the number one flight, 6-3, 3-6, 7-10, to WSU's Khadija Da-Silva and Tara Harvey lost in two sets (6-1, 6-2) at the second flight position. Macarena Bielsa and Laura (Fernandez) Valderrama each dropped 6-1, 6-1 decisions at number three and four singles, respectively.
The fifth flight saw Allison Grandfield lose 6-0, 6-0 as did junior Kirsten Malpass at number six by a 6-0, 6-2 score.
The Lakers, who are presently 1-2 overall and 0-1 in GLIAC action, continue their conference-opening road swing this Saturday (Sept. 16) in Ashland, Ohio, taking on the Ashland Eagles in a 10 a.m. (EDT) contest at AU's Deborah Liebart Karl Tennis Complex.
